Lunar Punk
Lunarpunk is an ecofeminist Moon appreciative subgenre of science fiction.
It is based on cyclical narrative forms and the understanding, that all life on Earth is intertwined, and should be regognized for their importance in the big web of everything.
Lunarpunk is based on the premise, that all life on Earth and ind the Oceans has an equal right to live. Also all kinds of habitats count as life, since nothing living can do without its home.
Lunarpunk meets Moon as the primordial mother of life on Earth by virtue of the fact that Moon controls the tides and has thus helped to create the rhythm and framework for life to arise.
The central understanding is that all living beings are children of Moon and therefore all have equal rights to protection and wellbeing. Noone, not even humans, are entitled to more than others.
Writings in the genre of Lunar Punk embodies this fact, ether writing as if it was already an acknowledged fact in our society, or by considering and narrating about occurrences through which societies can become more aware of it.
Like Ecofeminism, Lunarpunk links the oppression of women with the oppression of other minoritised humans and with the oppression and abbuse of nature, both the living and the non-organic kind. Everyone and everything deprived of agency by patriarchal culture, should organise and join forces. In this sence, the more priviliged should commit to contributing more and speaking on behalf of – or giving platforms to – the lesser privileged.
Writing in the genre is taking up this commitment, giving agency to all Moon’s children, including the rivers, the earth minerals, the plants and the animals, examining how we can strengthen our empathy and respect for other life-forms, through literature.
The movement is punk because it is driven by a force, an engine that wants to create change. It is not a fantasy, detached from reality. Lunarpunk is a proactive utopian practice, a genre where thinking and writing are based on the natural assumption that all life IS of equal value.
Where solarpunk romanticizes solar energy, Lunarpunk romanticizes the power of imagination or imagination energy (imergy). Our own inner lunatic ability to think up other realities and obvious things, and share them with each other until they become our new reality. It relies on the belive, that our biggest enemy in reacting properly towards the world and its multiple crises, is our lacking ability to imagine life otherwise. Lunarpunk is putting effort into nurturing this ability.
The lunar energy (lunargy) comes from inside ourselves. We must retrieve it and use it actively to create a caring and just world. We must use it to face the madness in capitalism, and use its power to reject the madness for the sake of all life living now and in the future.
We must think, speak and act as if a new world exists, in order to thereby make it exist. And we must first and foremost experience that just as Moon emits her own light, we also emit our own light, which is not a reflection, but an energy that we can make grow in strength – our imergy.
Lunarpunk is a safe space, a world of words and books, where we can explore the opportunities, consequences and gifts of another perception and another way of coexisting with Mother Moon and all of her children.
